I have been drawing inspiration
from games such as Capcom's Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (2017) and
Bloober Team's Layers of Fear (2016). I feel these games are successful
in creating a foreboding ambience through their environment design and
lighting. I am aiming to create a realistic art style for my environment as I
feel this lends a level of credibility to the situation the player will be in.
I want the environment to be believable and both of these games have done a
good job in immersing the player into the game world. As both games take place
in abandoned homes they are a great source of inspiration for me due to the similar
subject matter.
Resident Evil 7, does a fantastic job showing off the overall decay of the Baker
mansion and I will to use this as a benchmark for the deterioration that I want
my environment to have:

Layers of Fear uses the spacing throughout the environment to dwarf the player, making them feel small and helpless. Clever placement like this is something I really want to exploit with my game environment:
