Interior assets
The mansion is a relic of the long since passed ‘Gilded
Age’. To show off the wealth and prestige of the former owner, I want to create
ornate pieces of furniture that fit the era. This will unfortunately increase
the complexity of each asset so I will need to manage my time effectively in
order to create everything I want. Chairs, tables, grandfather clocks,
impressive fireplaces and all sorts of intricately designed items one might
expect to find hidden in a wealthy abode. The detail of each model will need to
be quite high, therefore I will need to utilise a lot of hard surface transfer
to bake details onto low poly models.
There is also the added challenge of making everything feel
dilapidated. The mansion has been abandoned for a very long time so the
furniture will need to reflect this. I plan on creating ‘clean’ assets then
taking them into Z-Brush to add some damage. I will then paint dirt and decay
onto the texture in Substance Painter.
Mansion Exterior
The exterior will need to show off the former splendour of
the mansion and its current state of disrepair.
I want to include elements like boarded up windows, smashed glass and
vines ensnaring the walls. I want to modularise the exterior so I can avoid
piecing all the assets together in 3DS Max before sending the environment over
to Unreal Engine.
Vegetation and
outdoor features
I would like to start the player outside the building in a
large garden area. They will begin by exploring the garden, not entirely sure
what kind of location they are in. Then they will stumble upon the mansion away
in the distance and head towards that.
I want to include Trees but I don’t have access to Speedtree
which is a software that lets you create believable vegetation very quickly. I
will have to model a few different types of tree using billboard techniques for
the leaves. There are some useful tutorials on Youtube for quick vegetation and
I will be experimenting with these soon. Additional Elements will be animated
grass that simulates wind blowing and elegant statues.
